Workshops

Internal workshops are an effective way to integrate expertise from all eight partner institutes and are a key part of Bioenergy NoE's work.

Environmental Assessment of Energy Crop Systems
Date: November, 2006
Place: Reims, France
Purpose: This workshop compared methodologies to help establish a common database and develop ideas for further joint activities. Experts outside Bioenergy NoE will give lectures on state-of-the-art LCA in agro-bioenergy production.

Integrating Life Cycle Analysis and Greenhouse Gas modelling expertise in Bioenergy NoE
Date: September, 2006
Place: Graz, Austria
Purpose: The goal is to integrate and exchange expertise between all Bioenergy NoE researchers working in LCA and GHG modelling.

Contact: Hannes Schwaiger, Joanneum Research

Bioethanl from Wood
Date: July 3-4, 2006
Place: Graz, Austria
Purpose: NoE researchers from all eight partners, and external experts from the Austrian Transportation Biofuels Platform met to share best practicies and compare country situations on the exploitation of biofuel potential from wood, particularly bioethanol. Common challenges facing Bioenergy NoE and a corresponding research agenda will be identified.

Biorefinery Processes
Date: 3 November 2005
Place: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Purpose: Analysis and definition of ten distinct types of biorefineries with the goal of providing an overview of promising biorefinery concepts for Europe. A report reviewing the field will be produced.

Ethanol from Lignocellulose
Date: October 2005
Place: Reims, France
Purpose: NoE researchers visited a small, biochemical research company that is wholly funded by farmers from the region. The company has facilities for fermentation and separation of products and presented plans for a new ethanol production plant in Reims. NoE partners gave presentations of their ongoing work in this area and a follow-up meeting in Finland to discuss further opportunities and learn about VTT?s technologies will be held in early 2006. ?These workshops bring a small group of researchers interested in the same area together?and I?m convinced that once you get people talking it will lead to integration,? said workshop organiser, Herman den Uil.

Techno-economic Analysis Meets Bioenergy Industry Realities
Date: May, 2005
Place: Berlin, Germany, Gubin & Dychow, Poland
Purpose: Bioenergy NoE researchers' focusing on Techno-economics met with industry and agricultural representatives to test their case-study analysis against industrial realities. In Berlin, researchers were hosted by Bewag at Heizkraftwerk Mitte, discussion focused on fuel choices and related barriers to bioenergy. In Dychow and Gubin, participants visited salix plantations and compared and debated barriers to energy plantations in Poland, Sweden and Germany. Industry representatives confirmed that the researchers' case-study approach to techno-economic analysis was highly relevant and useful and made recommendations for future joint work.
